Three Gorges: Beyond the Dam

Ruth Chan embarks on an expedition to experience the charm of the Long Jin Stream and Ancient Ba Village.

nown as a tourist destination, the Three Gorges Dam offers a scenic view of the landscape. However, surrounding it is the Tribe of the Three Gorges, boasting attractions that offer an experience like no other.

Long Jin Stream (龙津溪)

Tucked behind the towering mountains, at the intersection of the Yangtze River, lies the Long Jin Stream. My breath is taken away by the sheer magnitude of the landscape. Singapore's MacRitchie Reservoir holds no candle to the beauty of the Long Jin Stream.

With glistening crystal-clear waters and emerald green trees, it was like stepping into a fairytale. I have never seen waters so blue and clear that one’s reflection can be seen in it. There was not a single piece of litter in the stream and it seemed almost unreal.

Adding to the experience is the peacefulness and the serenity of the place. The cool breeze, the gentle flowing sound of the water and the smell of fresh air are enough to calm even the most troubled of minds.

Along the stream, there are demonstrations of what life was like for the Tujia ethnic minority, the descendants of the ancient Ba people. One can see men and women dancing and singing in traditional costumes. Flashing amicable smiles and interacting with the tourists, it was almost as though I was a part of a theatre production.

Merry laughter from a crowd drew my attention to a folk performance of a traditional yet unconventional method of marriage. An eligible maiden threw a red silk ball to a man in the audience, and he was then invited to take part in the performance. This recreated the idea of how women choose their partners in the past.

It was so interesting to see so much history and culture in one place, and for the chance to soak in it, I am truly grateful.

Ancient Ba Village

Stone Tablet

On the site of the first attraction is the Stone Tablet. Resembling a tall tombstone, it’s a memorial site from the Chinese Civil War in 1943, and my thoughts immediately drifted to the Kranji War Memorial back in Singapore.

As the Stone Tablet looms over the surrounding grass and rugged rocks, visitors stand in solemnity and pay respects to those who fought during the civil war.

King Ba Palace

A few staircases deeper into the village is the King Ba Palace. I stood in complete fascination that this was an actual palace 2,500 years ago. The crossbows I saw there were used to protect the palace. A place that was filled with so much bloodshed is now one for tourists to come and take pictures.

Speaking of a nationality that experienced prosperity but has since ceased to exist, the King Ba Palace stands to tell its tale.

Taichi Cat Hole

Venturing even further is the Taichi Cat Hole. It is a 1.5km long tunnel that takes about 40 minutes to walk down.

Stepping into the cave gave me a dark, mysterious feel with an element of fun and excitement. I felt like I had transcended into another world.

Stalactites and stalagmites hang and stand like guards. Lights of different colours reflected off them, giving a mysterious glow. Cool air blew at my face, as if beckoning me to venture deeper. I was strongly reminded of Aladdin’s cave, and absentmindedly start humming “A Whole New World”.

A splendour of the universe had been revealed to me through the journey to the Tribe of the Three Gorges. I am truly humbled by the experience.
